La Mara set to compete for 10th Copa D.C. title

The La Mara tradition is a story 30 years in the making. The team?s humble beginnings start in the streets of downtown DC, with a group of friends simply kicking around a soccer ball. ?And that is La Mara, just a group of people getting together and doing what they love most,? said Manager Alex Sandoval.

MLS 2011 Jerseys Unveiled: 'Cleanliness' and Conformity Reign

Major League Soccer remains haunted by the ghosts of horrible uniforms past.

The men in the photo to the right, which includes World Cup veterans like Tab Ramos, John Harkes and Roy Wegerle, are wearing the clown costumes designed for the league's inaugural campaign in 1996.

The uniforms (except Harkes') looked like the result of a tragic Spin Art accident or the creations of overly eager, soccer ignorant marketers trying to be outrageous. It was totally xtreme.

They were inspired by branding profiles such as these:

Tampa Bay Mutiny: "The...logo system doesn't have any rebellious sailors. No three-masted galleons. No rolling oceans. Just little green winged cyber-mutants from the dark blue depths of space."

San Jose Clash: "The driving spirit of the San Jose Clash is the scorpion. Quick, lethal and mean ... With shapes and colors that reflect the diverse ethnic makeup and heritage of the Bay Area, the logo system is derived from the soil it represents."

Kansas City Wiz: "Breakaways, bicycle kicks and sprawling headers will be the magic potion of the soccer wizards of Kansas City."

Dallas Burn: "The ... logo system starts with the cowboy of the asphalt West: the loners, outsiders and rebels found on cycle jackets and gas tanks."

Only two logos unveiled that day -- the New England Revolution's and Columbus Crew's -- remain untouched. That's progress.

DC United can?t overcome slow start against Everton

WASHINGTON ? It?s never easy to overcome a slow start in MLS, going down two goals early in the first half. Try doing it against an English Premier League side.

D.C. United were unable to accomplish that Saturday night against Everton, as the home side conceded two goals within the game?s first 20 minutes in a 3-1 loss.

?We can?t put ourselves behind 2-0 to a good team,? midfielder Chris Pontius said. ?Can?t do that in MLS, can?t do that against an EPL team. You?re chasing the game the whole time.?

Inactive All-Star De Rosario keeping focus on DC

WASHINGTON, DC ? For the sixth time in his lengthy MLS career, D.C. United midfielder Dwayne De Rosario was recognized as an MLS All-Star.

However, his status as an inactive All-Star ? not on the game day roster ? means that he can remain focused on his new club and won?t make the mid-week journey up north to face Manchester United.

The Canadian international saw the silver lining in not making the trip up to Red Bull Arena on Wednesday.

Recap: D.C. United 1 - Everton 3

WASHINGTON ? Two early first-half goals led Everton to a 3-1 win over D.C. United in a friendly at RFK Stadium Saturday night.

Victor Anichebe and Diniyar Bilyaletdinov each scored in the game?s first 16 minutes to pace the Premier League side past United, whose lone goal of the game came from Chris Pontius.

Within four minutes after kick off, Everton took the lead. Leighton Baines curled a ball from midfield over the D.C. United back line, and an on-rushing Anichebe beat Brandon McDonald to the ball, chipping over Bill Hamid to take the lead.

Barklage, Brettschneider return to training

WASHINGTON ? Two familiar faces returned to training for D.C. United this week, and it was a welcome sight.

Midfielder Brandon Barklage and forward Blake Brettschneider (above) were back in action on Tuesday after spending time on the sidelines recovering from concussions picked up in the past month.

?It?s good to be back out here,? Brettschneider said. ?Fortunately [it?s] not as hot as it?s been the last couple of weeks, it?s a little bit nicer to come back.?
