All stadiums are not created equal. And neither are the crowds.

Though each MLS stadium has its X-factor?elevation, weather, playing surface?it?s often the 12th Man that makes a venue most challenging for the visitors.

Clinton Portis Era Ends as Redskins Release Former Face of Franchise

Four days shy of seven years since he was acquired from the Denver Broncos in a blockbuster trade for All-Pro cornerback Champ Bailey, never-boring running back Clinton Portis was released by the Washington Redskins on Monday.

Portis, 29, was on track to surpass Hall of Famer John Riggins as Washington's all-time leading rusher before injuries -- a concussion in 2009 and abdominal muscle and groin tears in 2010 -- limited him to 13 games those past two seasons. Through Week 12 of 2008, Portis averaged 91.5 yards and 4.5 per carry in 95 games for the Redskins with 70 touchdowns. In his final 18 games in burgundy and gold, he averaged just 55.7 yards and 3.6 per carry with five touchdowns. With 6,824 yards for Washington, Portis wound up 648 yards shy of the top spot in franchise history. He's also just 77 yards shy of becoming only the 26th back with 10,000 during his career.

"If John Riggins is the only one you can say did more than me as a Redskins' running back, then that's pretty good company," Portis said Monday on Washington's 106.7 TheFan, the station on which his weekly paid appearances during recent seasons were must-listen radio.

"Clinton provided excitement from the very first time he touched the ball as a Redskin and we were lucky to witness every ounce of energy, effort and passion he has given ever since," Redskins owner Dan Snyder said in a statement released by the team. "We have been through a lot both on and off of the field and we would like to wish him and his family the very best. He will always be a Redskin and go down as one of the franchise's all-time greats."

With the inexperienced Ryan Torain (742 yards, 4.5 per carry and four touchdowns in 10 games last season, his first full one in the NFL) and Keiland Williams (261 yards, 4.0 per carry and three touchdowns as a rookie free agent in 2010), the Redskins could use a proven veteran in the backfield. However, coach Mike Shanahan said last Friday that Portis' $8.25 million base salary was unaffordable for that role. The Redskins saved $5.4 million on their salary cap (assuming there is one in 2011) by cutting Portis when his pro-rated bonus is included in the calculations.

"Not to say we don't want (Clinton to return), but for a lower price," Shanahan said.

The spotlight-loving Portis, who termed his release "a decision that was best for the both of us," didn't want to be a cheaper second banana.

"The idea that I'm a number two back, I'll never do that," Portis said during his radio appearance.

Appearances were often deceiving for Portis whether he was in the funny disguises --Sheriff Gonna Getcha, coach Janky Spanky, Southeast Jerome, Dollah Bill, Bro Sweets, etc. -- that he wore for his Thursday media sessions back in 2005 or whether he was lolly-gagging through practices only to play with passion on game days.

Moreno takes youth coaching role at DC

Last season marked the final year of Jaime Moreno?s playing days at D.C. United. Last week, however, the forward officially returned to the club in a coaching role as the youth academy's technical training coach.

The decision to hang up his cleats for good ? Moreno had playing opportunities he could have pursued in his native Bolivia ? didn?t come easy, but the current joint all-time leading goalscorer in MLS was happy to stay in the area.

Kitchen living up to early expectations in DC

WASHINGTON ? Back in January, D.C. United?s coaching staff was ecstatic when Perry Kitchen was available with the third overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft.

Nearly six weeks later, the tenacious 19-year-old has proved worthy of the hype and buzz created before the draft for the central defender/midfielder from Akron.

?He?s just who we?d thought he?d be,? United coach Ben Olsen said, "a very talented kid who?s ultra-competitive."

Davies: Bradley's advice influenced MLS choice

New D.C. United striker Charlie Davies says US coach Bob Bradley?s advice weighed heavily on his decision to join MLS, and that earning minutes in his new league is essential for his return to the national team limelight.

Davies joined ExtraTime Radio on Thursday for a lengthy interview discussing his plans in 2011 and his hopes for recovering the form that made him a superstar before suffering serious injuries in an Oct. 2009 car accident.

Zayner welcomes new child, new season with DC

While some of his teammates were relaxing and on vacation during the offseason, D.C. United defender Jed Zayner was busy welcoming a new member to his family.

His wife Katie gave birth to the couple?s first child on Nov. 24, and for the following two months Zayner quickly made a big adjustment to fatherhood, caring for his wife and newborn child.

?It?s a full-time job,? Zayner told MLSsoccer.com. ?I told her I was her nanny for the next couple of months. She definitely utilized that. I swear those first two weeks were a blur in my head and still are.?

Brettschneider, Onstad impress for DC in SoCal

Sometimes even the weather in Southern California can throw a wrench in preseason plans.

D.C. United, currently training out west, had to make a small change over the weekend thanks to a torrential downpour. The weather forced a friendly against PDL side Ventura County Fusion, originally scheduled for Saturday, to be pushed to Sunday.

That and another friendly Tuesday night against UC Santa Barbara meant the last few days were quite busy indeed ? a fact players are feeling now.
