Rodney Wallace Q&A

On Sunday, May 29 D.C. United will play its first match against MLS expansion side Portland Timbers. Even though this will be an inaugural encounter for two teams steeped in tradition, there is familiarity between these sides due to a number of offseason transactions that saw several players swap teams. United and Portland exchanged goalkeepers, as Steve Cronin joined the Black-and-Red and Troy Perkins left the District for the Rose City.

Brettschneider, Kitchen step up for United in win

From the beginning of the season, D.C. United made it very clear that young players would have to play a central role in any success in 2011.

On Sunday, two rookies ? Perry Kitchen and Blake Brettschneider ? stepped up as a makeshift DC side sent the Portland Timbers to their first home defeat of the year with a 3-2 win.

Finally injury-free, DC's Barklage escapes friendly unscathed

WASHINGTON ? Throughout D.C. United's 2-1 loss in a friendly to Ajax on Sunday, defender Brandon Barklage could hardly forget about the past.

Almost exactly a year ago, on May 26, Barklage played in a friendly against AC Milan and tore his ACL for the second year in a row. The injury ended his season.

?It was on my mind the entire time [against Ajax] because it?s a game that doesn?t mean anything, and I got injured in it last year,? Barklage told MLSsoccer.com.

Preview: Timbers put home streak on the line against DC

The Portland Timbers once again are putting their undefeated JELD-WEN Field league record on the line when they entertain D.C. United on Sunday afternoon. The Timbers have won five games on the trot at home, last a 1-0 win against Columbus. United are unbeaten in three games after a 1-1 draw with Colorado two weeks ago. The clubs also share a common opponent in Holland?s AFC Ajax, who they?ve faced in friendlies over the last week.

SET PIECE CAUTION

Ahead of Sunday's match against the Portland Timbers (5:00 p.m. ET/Comcast SportsNet), Thursday's D.C. United training session included a large portion of time devoted to set pieces. The team worked on both defending and scoring from dead-ball plays.

"[Portland] is very good on set pieces," Assitant Coach Chad Ashton said following training. "It's no secret that [set pieces] have been one of our weaknesses, so we're going to have to do a good job and hopefully do a better job on the offensive side of [set plays] as well."

Recap: D.C. United 3 - Portland Timbers 2

PORTLAND, OR ? D.C. United punctured the Portland Timbers? air of invincibility at JELD-WEN Field on Sunday, defeating the home side, 3-2.

Missing key offensive weapons Charlie Davies and Dax McCarty, both out with injuries, D.C. United became the first team in six to earn an MLS regular season victory in Portland.

It was a game that followed none of the familiar scripts at JELD-WEN Field ? and it included four penalty kicks.

Olsen: Gold Cup snub a "blow" to DC phenom Najar

WASHINGTON ? For Andy Najar, this June was supposed to be about stepping on the field and representing his native Honduras for the very first time in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

But a tricky series of events and a back-and-forth between D.C. United and the Honduran federation threw a wrench in the plans, before Honduras coach Luis Fernando Surez finally decided late last week not to call the midfielder into camp.

Najar was back on the training field Wednesday with D.C. United, and the youngster will spend the next month playing for his MLS club.

AJAX FRIENDLY PROVIDES MENTAL BOOST

In last Sunday?s friendly against Dutch side AFC Ajax, D.C. United showed that it could hold its own against the newly-crowned Eredivisie champions. Though the Black-and-Red fell 2-1 to Ajax, the experience provides a boost to the team?s confidence when the players resume League play against the Portland Timbers this coming weekend.
